Douglas County Sheriff's Office & the
Lawrence Police Department
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Lawrence Police Department will participate in the nationwide prescription drug "Take-Back Day" on Saturday, April 27. The program will collect expired, unused or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs. There are two collection sites in Lawrence: the short-term parking lot next to the county courthouse at 11th and Massachusetts streets and the Lawrence Police Department at 4820 Bob Billings Parkway. We will accept unwanted medications between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous.

Douglas County Senior Services
Douglas County Senior Services is looking for local businesses that offer senior discounts, so they may be included in a comprehensive list the organization is compiling for the seniors and Baby Boomers of Lawrence and Douglas County. Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center
Bert Nash CEO David Johnson participated in a staff briefing Thursday in Washington, D.C. The briefing was co-hosted by U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.) and Congressman Ron Barber (D-Ariz.) and sponsored by the National Council Behavioral Healthcare. David spoke on an innovative training program called Mental Health First Aid and H.R. 274, the Mental Health First Aid Act. The act is designed to help participants understand, identify and respond to mental health issues and disorders. Bert Nash specializes in mental health first aid training.

Crown Toyota/Scion/Volkswagen
Crown Toyota/Scion/Volkswagen has earned the 2012 President’s Award, one of Toyota Motor Sales’ highest honors. In order to qualify as a President’s Award winner, dealerships must excel in each of a series of categories, including customer sales satisfaction, customer service satisfaction and parts volume. Lawrence Habitat for Humanity
Lawrence Habitat for Humanity recently received a grant for $5,000 from the Douglas County Community Foundation to go toward purchasing a new construction truck. The truck will be used by Lawrence Habitat’s construction manager, Jonathan Groene, to travel between sites and haul whatever materials he may need on any given day. The organization’s current truck was donated used and can no longer handle the volume of daily tasks done by a homebuilding non-profit. The grant moves the organization closer to reaching their goal to purchase a new truck.

Downtown Lawrence, Inc.
After about two and a half years of service, Cathy Hamilton has decided to retire from Downtown Lawrence, Inc. She will continue with the organization until after the sidewalk sale on July 18. Thanks for all you've done, Cathy, and we wish you well!

Integrity Midwest Insurance
Chad Rea has joined Integrity Midwest Insurance as a sales executive. Chad will be responsible for new personal and business sales production and completing insurance policy reviews. Chad gained his customer service experience in his 10 years of sales in the construction industry. Integrity Midwest Insurance, L.L.C. is an independent insurance agency owned and operated by third generation insurance professionals.

Lawrence Arts Center
The Lawrence Arts Center invites you to its 2013 Benefit Art Auction on Saturday, April 13. Established by artists in 1981 as a way to fund a not-for-profit gallery, the auction provides funding for the exhibitions program now occupying five spaces in the Arts Center and enriched by Art Talks, films, and more. The silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m. and the live auction begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $40 in advance and $50 at the door. Click here to see more information about the auction. Lawrence Memorial Hospital
Lawrence Memorial Hospital has signed an agreement with the University of Kansas to start a pilot program to reduce healthcare costs by lowering the numbers of readmissions, focusing on those who use Medicare. The agreement is between the KU School of Social Welfare Office of Aging and Long Term Care.

Meritrust Credit Union
Meritrust Credit Union's newest Lawrence branch will open May 1 at 650 Congressional Drive. The branch at 4821 W. Sixth St. will close at the end of business on Firday, April 26. The new location will serve members with lobby hours, a drive-through and a walk-up ATM.

Lawrence Arts Center
The Lawrence Arts Center invites you to its 2013 Benefit Art Auction on April 13. Established by artists in 1981 as a way to fund a not-for-profit gallery, the auction provides funding for the exhibitions program now occupying five spaces in the Arts Center and enriched by Art Talks, films, and more. The live auction begins at 5:30 p.m. April 13. Tickets cost $40 in advance and $50 at the door.

Mize, Houser & Company
Susan T. Hammons, PMP, Lori L. Pittman, CPA and Steven A. Talken, CPA have been admitted as shareholders in the firm. Susan joined Mize Houser in 1985 and has focused her career on providing consulting services and project management in the areas of Information Technology and software development for both external clients and internal resources. Lori joined Mize Houser in 2005 and has focused her career on performing audits in the manufacturing, retail and service industries and on employee benefit plans. Steve joined Mize Houser in 1987 and has focused on performing audits in the construction, manufacturing and distribution industries.

United Way of Douglas County
The United Way of Douglas County has realigned its human resources to fully support its community impact goals. Lori Johns, who has served as the director of the United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center for three years, is now the United Way’s director of volunteer engagement. Micki Chestnut, who has served as the associate director of the United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center since 2010, is now the United Way’s director of communications.Shelly Hornbaker joined the United Way staff in March as the volunteer center coordinator for the United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center. Congratulations to all on the new positions!

AT&T
AT&T recently opened its new store at 3310 Iowa St. Suite A, and celebrated the recent launch of its 4G LTE network in Lawrence. Since 2009, AT&T has invested more than $725 million in its Kansas wireless and wireline networks.

City of Lawrence
Margene Swarts, has retired after 33 years of service with the city. Margene began her tenure as a building and code inspector; she retired as the assistant director of development. Thank you for your service, Margene!

Lawrence Public Library
Youth services assistant Rebecca Dunn has been named to the “Movers & Shakers 2013” list by Library Journal, a national publication about the library industry. Dunn was recognized as a “Community Builder” for her involvement with implementing a youth-oriented Read Across Lawrence program for 2,500 Lawrence children and teens. She has worked at the library since 2011. Congratulations, Rebecca!

Meadowlark Estates
Larry and Phyllis Peer have recently been promoted to the position of managers at the Senior Center for Independent Living in Lawrence, located at Sixth and Folks streets. They opened the building in August 2011. Larry and Phyllis are originally from the Wichita area and are glad to be back in Kansas.
