Chamber Fueling the Economy

KAN Agri Energy, the entity that was recently formed from the Chamber’s Agribusiness Network, was successful in gaining approval for a $40,000 loan from the Kansas Department of Commerce to conduct a feasibility study for a potential biodiesel plant in Douglas County. The study is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

New Industrial Park Being Planned

The Economic Development Board is continuing to make progress on efforts to identify future areas for industrial park and open space development. We currently have 249 acres available for sale in Douglas County, which will be absorbed within the next 5-8 years based upon past history. The Board is preparing detailed cost estimates for the industrial sites identified including the redevelopment of the Farmland Industries site and area near the Lawrence Municipal Airport near Interstate 70. At the September meeting, the ED Board will finalize the industrial park locations and open space projects and prepare recommendations to the City and County Commissions.

Training Enhancements Underway

As a result of the Chamber’s annual Business Retention Survey, the USD 497 Technical Training Taskforce was formed to develop a plan for the enhancement of training offerings in Douglas County. The Task Force is in the process of developing recommendations of how to promote existing training programs and provide additional training in Douglas County, which will be complete by the end of the year.

A yearly tri-fold brochure that features demographic information on Lawrence and Douglas County.
