Technology

Lawrence has achieved a critical mass necessary for technology entrepreneurs to flourish. In fact, the state of Kansas has worked hard to help technology-based businesses.

Technology Transfer

Transfer of technology is one of the most active growth sectors of the U.S. economy. The University of Kansas (www.ukans.edu) encourages cooperation and discovery conducive to the creation of tech- based products for the marketplace.

Technology Resources

Lawrence Technology Association (www.lawrencetech.org), the state's only technology networking group, provides researchers, scientists, businesses and entrepreneurs networking opportunities.
Lawrence Regional Technology Center (www.lrtc.biz), a business incubator, provides valuable resources and services for technology-based companies.

KU Small Business Development Center works to grow Kansas entrepreneurs by providing low cost training seminars, and counseling services.

Centers of Excellence

Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (www.ktec.com) created Centers of Excellence at Kansas universities. Two are based at the University of Kansas.

The Higuchi Biosciences Center (www.hbc.ku.edu), marshals expertise for research in a range of scientific disciplines that create technology available for commercial licensing and has led to the creation of several new companies.
The Information and Telecommunication Technology center (ITTC) (www.ittc.ukans.edu) organizes its efforts into five advanced research areas and serves as the KU office of technology transfer.

University Commitment

KU has also made significant gains in research. According to the KU Center for Research (www.research.ku.edu/kucr), in the past five years, KU ranks #1 in the nation for increased research funding as compared to all public universities. An estimated 9,000 jobs are created each year from KU research. The KU Office of Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property works closely with designated research centers at the University and external economic development organizations to bridge the gap between technology development and commercial application.

Add important research in other areas such as education, aviation and engineering, and the quarter-billion dollars a year in research funding that KU brings to Lawrence creates nearly a billion dollars a year for the Kansas economy.

Kansas University's Office of Technology works closely with business and industry to connect technology development and commercial applications. Browse KU's Technology Transfer News for the latest news about KU's technology transfer efforts.
