Aquila

Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Aquila, Inc. (NYSE:ILA) operates electricity and natural gas distribution networks serving about one million customers in seven U.S. states. In Kansas the Company serves 100,000 natural gas customers and 68,000 electric customers.

Incentives

Aquila offers an economic development rate to new customers with a minimum requirement of 50 Mcf per day or to existing customers that expand their facilities or operations such that incremental gas requirements are increased by more than 50 Mcf per day and annual gas consumption increases by 5% or more. During the first year, the firms would qualify for a 60% of margin reduction in their bill. The reduction decreases to 40% of margin the second year and at the end of the second year, the discounts will cease. Water

City of Lawrence Water Distribution Division

The City of Lawrence Water Distribution Division is responsible for installation, maintenance, inspection and repair of the water pipelines that deliver drinking water from the water treatment plants to your taps. The system consists of pipes ranging in size from the large 24" transmission lines to small 3/4" service lines. Five rural water districts and Baldwin City also receive water from the City's distribution system.

The Water Treatment Division operates two treatment facilities, The Kaw River Water Treatment Plant and the Clinton Reservoir Water Treatment Plant.

The Kaw River Water Treatment Plant
  • Completed in 1917, addition completed in 1958
  • Capacity stands at 16.5 million gallons per day (MGD).
  • Plant draws its water from the Kansas River and six alluvial wells on the River banks.
The Clinton Reservoir Water Treatment Plant
  • Capacity of 15 million gallons per day
  • Plant was put into service on March 1, 1980 an expansion increased the capacity from 10 million gallons per day to 15 million gallons per day.
  • The Clinton Reservoir serves as the source of raw water to this plant.

Sewer Services

Public Works is a full service, front-line operational department. Sewer

The City of Lawrence Wastewater Collection Division is responsible for maintaining the sanitary sewer collection system that collects and delivers wastewater to the Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. The collection system infrastructure includes 400 miles of gravity and forced sewer mains, 15,000 manholes and 38 lift stations. The sewer lines are constructed of vitrified clay pipe, PVC truss pipe and SDR pipe. The pipes range in size from 8 inches to 48 inches in diameter.

Storm Water Utility

The Stormwater Engineering Division was created in 1996 to manage the stormwater utility and to implement other recommendations of the Stormwater Management Master Plan. Stormwater Utility fees are charged to all landowners based on impervious surfaces on each property. The resulting revenue supports a coordinated stormwater management program of capital improvements, system maintenance, development review and pollution prevention measures.
