PIECE Project

One of the great things about Leadership Lawrence is the opportunity to work with the youth of this community. The mission of the Kansas Health Foundation is to make Kansas the healthiest state in which to raise a child and developing community leaders is a key to that mission. To that end, Leadership Lawrence classes design and implement youth projects during their class year. These are sustainable and involve a lot of volunteer hours, but the rewards are unbelievable.

This year a group from the class is continuing to work on the PIECE Project (Peer Involvement Encouraging Community Engagement) and that effort will be kicked off in January with the recruitment and selection of the first class of youth leaders. The announcement of the PIECE Project Class of 2008 will be annouced on April 27, 2007 at the Leadership Lawrence graduation breakfast. These twenty future leaders will be engaged in a series of monthly sessions where they will learn abouth their role in the community and complete the year with a community service project.

In addition to that a group will be working with members of the Fire and Medical Department on Project Kindergarten, a bicycle helmet distribution and fitting program aimed making sure that each kindergartner has a helmet and knows how to wear it.

The final project is E on E (Elderly on Email) and pairs Free State High School students with residents of Brandon Woods to work on computer skills. Watch for continued updates on the progress of these wonderful projects.

The Class Project is sponsored through a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation. Guidelines focus on improving the health and well being of youth living in the area. A grant and the commitment of active involvement in the project, by Leadership Lawrence, round out the guidelines.
